The mayors of Canada’s two most populous cities, John Tory of Toronto and Denis Coderre of Montreal, announced Wednesday (March 25) they are going to work together on such issues as housing, infrastructure and public transit.
“The two solitudes are over,” announced Coderre, referring to the divide that once was said to separate English and French Canada. He said the “metropolis of Canada and the metropolis of [the province of] Quebec” would now join forces.
The leaders of Canada’s two major cities met privately in Mayor Tory’s office Wednesday morning before meeting journalists.
“In this very complicated, very competitive world,” said Tory.”We are going to gain more as cities, as the two biggest cities in Canada… if we work more together.”
During a press conference in Toronto, the mayors acknowledged that in a federal election year (scheduled in October) federal political parties would probably be more receptive to requests from the two cities.
