A United Nations panel has singled out Canada and Australia as countries that “appear to have withdrawn entirely from constructive international engagement on climate,” reports the Globe and Mail newspaper. The African Progress Panel, co-chaired by former U.N. secretary-general Kofi Annan, condemned Canada as an international climate laggard, doing worse than Ethiopia in mitigating climate change.
Canadian officials were questioned about Canada’s commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by officials at a U.N. climate conference in Bonn. The goal of the meeting is to try to make progress in hammering out an international agreement in the run-up to the climate change conference in Paris in December.
Officials from other countries noted Canada is not on track to meet its 2020 target, reports the Globe. A South African representative said that Canada’s target for 2020 would leave its emission levels higher than they were in 1990.
