PEI gets Mandarin news on YouTube

Mark Murphy is one of the many Chinese immigrants to the island province of Prince Edward Island. He has been in Canada for 10 years and spent the last three in PEI.  The island has experienced an influx of Chinese immigrants arriving due to a provincial nominee program that has now changed the make-up of the province.

Between 2006 and 2011, the number of people claiming Chinese ethnicity grew from 250 to 1,920, and in PEI that’s more than once per cent of the population.

But many of the new islanders are still struggling with English, so Mark Murphy, an accountant by training, is producing a news program, in Mandarin, to inform them.  Called Ocean Heart TV, Murphy scans the newspapers and pays attention to the news for content for his program.

He told CBC News, ‘Everybody wants to know what’s going on in the world, especially where they are right?”  He says, “It’s necessary for them to understand the culture here, the law here, the government here, because in a lot of countries they don’t get to chose their government, in this country, once they become Canadian citizens they can have a say in the government.”
