Tinned Canadian air for sale.

Nope it’s not a joke. It started as a joke, but it’s not anymore.

Selling canned air from the Canadian Rockies in western Canada has become a thriving business.

The company, based in Edmonton Alberta,  is called Vitality Air.  http://vitalityair.com/

The company sells a variety of sizes of Rocky Mountain air. The one in the centre has its own face mask and is good for 150 inhalations, but it’s not cheap at C$32

It started when Moses Lam took an ordinary zip lock bag, waved it around and sold it for 99-cents online. That was the joke.  When another bag was sold at USD $168, he and business partner Troy Paquette stopped laughing and starting thinking.

What developed was a slightly pressurized can that comes with it’s own face mask as the cap.

There are now various sizes of the air collected at the mountain ski resort areas of Lake Louise and Banff in Alberta, but the typical tin contains 7.7 litres of “air” which is advertised as providing about 150 inhalations.

The company was created in 2014.  Registered in March this year they set up an on-line store soon afterward.  Lam says they are now exporting  product to several foreign countries.

Lam says they are targetting heavily populated cities and where air pollution is a problem. They even have a Chinese representative.  Harrison Wang put 500 bottles on a Chinese e-commerce website and they sold out within four days with people asking to become distributors. Another shipment is already on its way.

Banff Alberta is one of the areas the air is collected from. The company makes no medical claims as to the air’s benefits, but it seems to be a hot seller in heavily polluted cities like Beijing

Still it’s not yet a full time job, as Lam continues his day job at a bank. As to whether it’s a fad the company website makes reference to bottled water sales, noting that people are starting to appreciate “premium air” too.
