Rabbis rule marijuana need not be certified kosher

Canada’s largest kosher certification agency has ruled that cannabis oil used for medicinal purposes does not need to be certified, reports Canadian Press. Kosher certification guarantees that foods conform to Jewish law which has strict rules about the types of food that can be eaten and how they are prepared.

The Kashruth Council of Canada was asked to rule on the matter by MedReleaf, a licensed producer of medical marijuana. Rabbis of the council decided that medicine that is prescribed for a person’s health does not require kosher certification.

Court rules in favour of edible forms

As of 2011, there were 329,500 Canadians who said their religion was Jewish in the government’s national household survey. It’s not clear how many of keep kosher by strictly following Jewish dietary law.

In July 2015, the Supreme Court of Canada ruled that patients who have a prescription for the medical use of marijuana should be allowed to consume it in edible forms.

Canada certifies producers

Canada has recently adopted regulations governing the production of medical marijuana and ordering that producers be licensed.

Shortly after his election in October 2015, Canada’s new prime minister, Justin Trudeau promised he would make the recreational use of marijuana legal.
