In yesterday’s issue, the Daily Mail alleged that just a fraction of the money donated to the Didier Drogba Foundation went to the charitable causes it was intended for.

Instead, according to the newspaper, the money went to lavish fundraising parties that included guests such as Bono of U2 and David Beckham. The UK’s Charity Commission is now launching an investigation.

Drogba, an international soccer star from Ivory Coast, defended his foundation saying in a statement, “there is no fraud, no corruption, no mismanagement, no lies, no impropriety.” He said, “Their attempts to destroy the work of the foundation will not deter me and will not stop me continuing the work we have begun.”

The Didier Drogba Foundation, established to help sick children in Africa, raised about $3.1 million. According to the Daily Mail, less than one per cent of that has gone to helping children.

The foundation says it has built a hospital and five clinics in Ivory Coast. The newspaper contends that just one clinic was built and that the hospital is empty, without equipment or staff.
