Pilot program offers legal advice to sexual assault victims

The province of Ontario is offering four hours of free legal advice to victims of sexual assault as part of a pilot program. The program will be available to men and women who aged 16 years and older.

It’s estimated one in three women and one in six men in that province suffer some form of sexual assault in their lifetimes.

Lawyers are very expensive

In Canada, a lawyer with one year’s experience bills an average $230/hr. One with 20 years’ experience may bill $411/hr. Most people cannot afford this and one has to be extremely poor to qualify for government-funded free legal aid.

The lawyers participating in this free advice program will not represent clients or speak for them in court. The service is designed to help them make decisions about how or whether they should proceed legally.
