Canadian duck producers ramping up output

Canadian duck producers are planning to double their output even though they face tough competition from cheaper imports, reports Canadian Press (CP). Their production costs are higher and strong safety regulations make their products less competitive in terms of price.

But there is a hike in domestic demand for several reasons. Popular cooking shows on TV have prompted more people to try duck. Ontario’s market is increasing with the arrival of more immigrants from countries like Russia and the Czeck Republic where duck is commonly eaten. Beef prices have gone up prompting consumers to look for alternatives. And the Mexican market has reopened.

Duck classes are popular

Producers are also being more creative in their marketing. Brome Lake Ducks has a specialty shop in Montreal and holds a duck festival every year. King Cole has opened a store in Toronto and holds duck cooking classes which usually sell out.

Cheap imports have flooded the Canadian market over the last two years, reports CP. Producers complain that consumers are misled because ducks from outside the country are often butchered or cooked and then sold as “made in Canada.”
