Grizzly bears in backyard had ‘no fear’: video

A western Canadian was still on edge three days after three grizzly bears visited his backyard on September 8th and refused to leave, reports the public broadcaster, CBC. The incident happened near Pincher Creek, a town which is about 200 kilometres south of Calgary in the province of Alberta.

Keith Lang was working on fences and returned home in his truck at around supper time. He was getting water for some cattle and horses when he saw three grizzly bears coming down the lane.

Unconcerned, at first

It wasn’t the first time he had seen bears in the area and at first, he was unconcerned. “I didn’t think much of it. I figured they would make a wide berth around the place,” Lang told CBC News.

But then: “My wife said, ‘Oh my God, they are already in the yard,'” Lang said.

Lang’s daughter Kayla had pet ducks in the yard and she used her phone to record what happened next. Warning: In the heat of the moment she used some profanities.

‘They weren’t going to leave’

“I’ve seen bears cruise through the yard in the middle of the day and once you spook them, usually they will run,” he told CBC.

“These ones did not care whatsoever and they weren’t going to be told what to do and they weren’t going to leave, they were going to stick around. We made a pile of noise and I eventually drove that truck up to within about 10 feet of that bear before he left.”

Officials offer electric fencing

Lang and his family hope they scared the bears enough that they won’t feel comfortable in their yard. He remarked that bears are hungry at this time of year and are bolder. Bears are eating as much as they can to store fat for the coming winter during which they hibernate for five to seven months.

The ducks survived the visit, and government fish and wildlife officers offered some electric fencing for the duck pen.

Grizzly bears weigh between 100 and 400 kg and stand up to 120cm tall. They can runs 45 km per hour and are present in western Canada. They are omnivores.
