E-glasses give boy first-ever glimpse of mom

A blind boy was delighted to see clearly for the first time thanks to special glasses and he declared his mother had a big nose, reports CBC’s Austin Grabish.

Ten-year-old Benny Francey, from the western city of Selkirk, Manitoba has a rare disease called Leber Congenital amaurosis. He saw only silhouettes until he tried on a pair of eSight glasses in Toronto.

‘Wow’

“When he put on the glasses we could tell that he could see because his first word was ‘wow,'” said Benny’s mom Jenna Cason. Then he commented on her nose, to laughter all around.

The glasses have a camera that can capture and project images very close to the eye. They cost over $20,000.

Aunt raised money for glasses

Benny’s aunt, Amanda Vitt launched a GoFundMe campaign to raise money to pay for them and for horseback riding therapy for his brother Ashton who is autistic and has no chance of seeing.

Vitt told CBC she was nervous when Benny put on the glasses, because there was no guarantee he would be able to see. Now that they know the glasses work, they have ordered a customized pair which should arrive next month.

After seeing his mom’s face, Benny watched Kung Fu Panda and some photos from a family vacation to Mexico.
