Stephen Harper and wife, Laureen, take a boat up the Yukon river under the Miles Canyon suspension bridge in Whitehorse on Friday. We see a blue and white speedboat approaching us, her white wake contrasting with the crystal blue water of the river. The river sits between 30 ft. high gray and mossy rocks. Sitting overhead is a thin white bridge filled with photographers and journalists. We don't actually see that the Harpers are in the boat, but it sure is a pretty picture.

North gets new Research Council funding

The federal government will fund a new $17-million National Research Council program in Canada’s North.

The Arctic-focused program will concentrate on resource development, transportation and shipping, marine safety technologies and community infrastructure.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper made the announcement on Thursday in Whitehorse, Northwest Territories during his ninth annual visit to the region.

Mr. Harper said the funding will take place over eight years and that Ottawa will seek another $65-million in co-investments from industry over that same period.

He said a major aim of the program will be to help bridge the gap between research and the marketplace.

Mr. Harper was to visit Fort Smith in the Northwest Territories on Friday to make an agricultural announcement.
