Milk producers demand a halt to U.S. imports

Milk producers are demanding the Canadian government enforce tariffs that are supposed to be collected on dairy products imported from the United States, reports Canadian Press.

It seems that Canadian customs agents are admitting a milk protein called diafiltered milk without collecting any tariff. This say dairy farmers is costing them tens of thousands of dollars annually.

Canadian regulations require cheese to have a minimum percentage of milk in it, but cheese producers are instead using the cheaper diafiltered milk, which is cheaper.

Canada’s dairy industry is controlled by a supply management system.

Milk producers have been vigourously protesting the Trans-Pacific Partnership which would open the border to more milk from the U.S. That deal has been signed, but not ratified by Parliament.
