Margaret Atwood’s, The Handmaid’s Tale ballet making its debut

‘The Handmaid’s Tale’, one of Margaret Atwood‘s most popular novels has been produced as a film, an opera, and tonight it will debut as a ballet.

The Winnipeg Ballet Company opens its season with the longheld vision of artistic director André Lewis, American choreographer Lila York, and the music of James MacMillan.

The dystopian story was published in 1985 and won Canada’s prestigious Governor General’s Award, among others, that year.  It chronicles the brutal regime that keeps a concubine-like class of women who exist only to reproduce for the leaders.

Margaret Atwood will attend the world premier this evening.
