Parliament Hill temporarily shut down this morning

A man was arrested this morning after a suspicious package was reported inside a building that houses Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s office, near Parliament Hill.  The Prime Minister was not in the building at the time.

All eyes were already on Ottawa, as the much-anticipated Throne Speech by the Governor General was to take place late this afternoon.  The Throne Speech outlines the government’s plans and priorities in this new session of parliament.

The suspicious package, had paralyzed Parliament Hill, with a lock-down imposed for security.  The Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear and Explosives (CBRNE) unit investigated the package, and police had moved the assembled media further back for their safety.

A suspicious man was reported in the area and he was apprehended outside, according to a Royal Canadian Mounted Police spokesperson.
