The ill-effects of Old Man Winter just keep hanging around

The noted baseball philosopher Yogi Berra is reputed to have noted that something “ain’t over until it’s over.”

Welcome to Eastern Canada and that icy blast of winter that hit 11 days ago, throwing tens of thousands of people out of electricity just in time for the Christmas season.

The storm is done. The ill-effects? Not so much.

With temperatures plunging, power was still out Wednesday morning for about 1,100 homes and businesses in Ontario, including some 160 in Toronto. Also waiting to be re-connected are 650 customers in New Brunswick and just under 100 in Quebec.

Meanwhile, the provincial government in Ontario government says more grocery gift cards will be handed out this week in Toronto to people who lost food when the power went out.

More than $160,000 in gift cards were handed out Tuesday. However, many people who lined up still left empty-handed.

The province says the cards will be made available Thursday and Friday.
