Environmental groups in Canada and the United States warn that not enough is being done to stop chemical pollution to North America’s Great Lakes, five of the great natural wonders of North America.
The warning comes just three years after the two countries negotiated a water-quality agreement.
The warning is contained is a letter to the heads of the Great Lakes executive committee, which oversees the agreement.
The letter and a new report by the Canadian Environmental Law Association say little headway is being made in solving the pollution problem.
The environment groups want the Canadian and U.S. governments to expand their list of dangerous chemicals and to set up a scientifically viable process for adding prioritizing dangerous chemicals.
The groups call for more action to stop toxins from getting into the water, noting that PCBs and mercury are still found in the lakes despite decades to attempting to stop their flow.
The groups say scientists are concluding that there are no safe limits for many chemicals.
