Cabot Trail under construction

The Cabot Trail is one of the most beautiful drives in the world. And this summer, the northern region of Nova Scotia, will have several stretches under construction. The work is part of a five-year plan to upgrade the infrastructure, some of it in areas in accute need of repair.

Parks Canada, the department overseeing the trail in Cape Breton Highlands National Park, has organized the work on areas including roads, bridges and culverts

Kelly Deveaux is the department’s visitor experience manager for the park, She says there will be 10 construction projects on the Cabot Trail this summer.

“That’s going to impact both residents and visitors who are touring the Cabot Trail,” she warned.

“We have a number of strategies in place to try to decrease the wait times, but when you look at the volume and the number of projects all taking place in the same season, wait times and delays are definitely going to be top of the list for impacts.” she told CBC News.

Tourism operators are finding it a mixed blessing in a year they’re expecting an increase in visits due to the so-called “Trump-Bump”. This is the increased interest in the Cape, provoked by the website inviting Americans to come to Cape Breton.

Perhaps the construction sites will be in places where one can really enjoy the view!
