Ontario provides more money for refugee support

Canada’s most populous province, Ontario, is adding $1.55 million to the millions it will spend to support refugees, reports Canadian Press. Ontario has resettled more than 12,000 Syrian refugees since November 2015 as part of a Canadian initiative that has so far received just under 30,000 Syrian asylum seekers.

Ontario expects to welcome more than 20,000 refugees from around the world this year. The new funding will top up the sum of $8.5 million the province said it would spend over 2 ½ years on initiatives like settlement services, mental health support and programming for students.

Much of the money will go to 26 settlement agencies which will deliver services.
