Going, going…last hope for historic building has gone

An old and now decrepit building in Nova Scotia is on the verge of being torn down.

It’s not just any old building though, it is what’s left of The Commercial Cable Company building in Nova Scotia.

It was through this office that news of the 1912 Titanic tragedy along with the many heartbreaking messages was further spread to the world as the relay from the Newfoundland Cape Race station which had picked up the signals..

It was once considered one of the high-tech marvels of the turn of the twentieth century handling thousands of telegraph messages between North America and Europe. An entire community, Hazel Hill, was built by the company for its employees.

But newer technology caught up with the telegraph as telephone became international and its use replaced the telegraph.

The building closed in 1962 and was left abandoned.

Demolition imminent

During the past decade or more a group recognizing its historical and heritage importance has been trying to raise funds for restoration, as well as a functional purpose and occupants for the building in Canso.

It’s been a struggle with the fate of the building hanging in the balance with the end announced as far back as 2014.  The group struggled on but they’ve admitted defeat and turned the building back over to the municipality in July.

Any hope of saving the building has finally gone as city engineers saying it has deteriorated too much and poses a potential collapse and safety risk to the street below.

Any hope of saving the historic structure is gone, and now its disappearance is imminent.

Though it will cost around $100,000 to take it down, that process is likely to happen in the very near future. By the end of this year nothing will remain but the foundation which it is hoped will serve as the basis for some new building.
