We see a wide shot of an absolutely gorgeous, peaceful and blue lake surrounded by deep-green pines. Rising above the lake and trees are the massive gray and snowcovered Rocky Mountains, which are reflected in the lake. Overhead, the sky is a azure.

Environmentalists fear effects of Banff plans

Environmental groups in Alberta are expressing concern about the pace and scope of development at one of Canada’s most pristine national parks.

The Alberta Wilderness Association says new Parks Canada proposals for the Lake Louise ski area in Banff National Park located in the Canadian Rockies would permit new ski lifts and facilities in wildlife habitats.

Parks Canada counters that the proposals reduce the amount of land in the ski area’s lease.

But Alberta Wilderness Association spokesman Sean Nichols says the land in question is unsuitable for development in any case.

Nichols says the Parks Canada plan is geared toward increased commercialization of national parks and is part of a growing trend.
