Canada may rejoin global fight against droughts

Canada’s prime minister says his government will consider rejoining the United Nations convention that combats desertification, reports Canadian Press. The previous Conservative government quit the convention in 2013 calling it a useless “talkfest.” That made Canada the only country out of more than 190 members of the UN to not be involved.

On March 16, 2016 Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced his intention to seek a seat on the UN Security Council, in sharp contrast to the previous prime minister who snubbed the UN.

More evidence ‘Canada is back’

After the Conservatives were defeated in the election of October 2015, newly-elected Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said “Canada is back,” signalling a reversal of the previous government’s disengagement in global affairs.

Trudeau told the House of Commons yesterday that Canada recognizes the link between addressing land degradation and climate change in order to fight world poverty. He promised more information to come on or before June 17th, which is World Day to Combat Desertification.
